The Difference Between Some Wire Connectors

2022-07-04

In the connector industry, we often encounter the terms Connector, Plug, Jack, Port, Socket, and Slot, which are very easy to confuse. I have compiled some of them today, and I will introduce them to you next.

# Plug

The plug is the part of the cable that connects to the port. A plug is always connected to something else (eg, a jack or port). For example, the most common plugs are those that connect computers, monitors, and other devices to a power source. Pictured is a common desktop power cord with the plug end connected to a wall outlet and the female end connected to a computer or monitor.

Notice:

In our power cord plug example, the plug varies in different countries around the world.

# Cable and cord

A cable or wire is one or more wires in a plastic covering that allow power or data to be transferred between devices. The image below is an example of a Cat 5 network cable. For a list of cable types used with your computer, we'll explain cable definitions in a later article.

# Wire

A wire is a single strand of metal (such as copper) or an optical fiber capable of transmitting power or data from one area to another.

# Connector

A connector is the only end of a plug, jack, or card edge that connects to a port. For example, all desktop computer expansion cards have a connector that allows them to connect into slots on the motherboard. When referring to a cable, a connector is the end of the cable that connects to the port. For example, a USB Cable has a connector on the end that connects to a USB port.
